If you fish for sport or leisure, the waters are equipped with gills (pun intended) all year. Here are some tips for make sure you fully enjoy your fishing trip.
Deadlines: All year, you can start fishing 30 minutes before official sunrise and must end no later than thirty minutes after official sunset.
Rod Rules: Only use hand-held rods, artificial flies or lures, and hooks for fish only. Up to two dropper flies on a leader to be allowed as well. No other fish bait or liquid scent is allowed, and the use of dual treble, or gang hooks. authorized personnel can inspect your fishing tackle and equipment at any time while you're at the park.
Catch Limits: You can hold up to five trout or small mouth bass each day, as long as any mass fish At least seven inches in length. Once you catch five, you should quit for the day. In addition, you can keep 20 Rock Bass every day.
Fun Fact: the most popular fish and native species only in the U.S. Southeast Appalachian Brook Trout.
Fish Forbidden: Spotfin chub, Duskytail launchers, smoke Madtom, and Yellowfin federal Madtom are protected within the park, and if you happen to catch one, make sure to practice catch and release.
Forbidden Waters: In the Tennessee side of the park, you can not fish at Camp Lynn prong upstream where it joins Thunderhead horn. In North Carolina side, stay away from Bear Creek meets the Forney Creek. For countries correctly, see the map online or at any park visitor center.
License, please: All anglers must obtain a license from either Tennessee or North Carolina. All anglers must also be at least 13 years old, and has a special license for those over 65. Also Although you can not buy a license within the park, nearby towns sell them, or you can purchase one online. Take into account the special permits are required for fishing in Gatlinburg or Cherokee.
Safety First: Know the park water safety guidelines. prolonged immersion in water, even just walking or wading, depletes the body heat and can cause hypothermia. sudden mountain storms come without warning in time, so it is important to keep an eye on water levels around you. Current moves faster than you think, and is easy to lose balance on wet rocks and slippery moss.
Respect second of all, Smoky Mountain National Park wants to preserve the natural resources in their unaltered state. Therefore, do not move the rocks in rivers as this can damage the natural habitats of fish. Keep your site clean fishing. If you look artificial or treat waste, clean it, and report the incident to park authorities.
Bearing in mind these tips and rules ensures that future generations can enjoy fishing in the park. But for now, enjoy fishing and good luck!
